On 10/28/2017 the Thornwood Fire District hosted a "wetdown" for our new apparatus, Engine 89. A "wetdown" is considered a dedication ceremony similar to the way new ships are "christened" before their maiden voyage. Traditionally, a wetdown would consist of neighboring departments surrounding the newly acquired apparatus and using their deck guns to shower it with water, and some departments still do it this way. Fire Departments throughout the United States take pride in their equipment and it is a tradition in the fire service to celebrate a new piece of apparatus and wish it well in its years of its service to the community. Today, we host a celebration and invite surrounding departments to come inspect and check out the new rig and dedicate it with a bottle breaking ceremony.
Our new Engine 89 is a 2017 Sutphen Custom Pumper and was placed into service on May 30th, 2017. It was a great party and we thank all who attended and God Bless Engine 89 in her years of service to the residents of Thornwood and surrounding neighborhoods. The current Engine 89 replaced our 1991 Pierce Lance Pumper, which also held the same designation. A special thank you to 5-Alarm Pizza Company for supplying food and refreshments.
