On Saturday May 6th, 2017, the Thornwood Fire Company held its annual Inspection dinner and Award ceremony. This event is where the Fire Commissioner's and the members congratulate the Chiefs and line Officers and recognize members for their years of service and outstanding accomplishments. It is also where we show our pride and commitment to the Fire Service to local officials and special guests. Prior to the inspection, the members spend an entire two weeks cleaning every aspect of the firehouse. From tools to apparatus to the firehouse, everything is cleaned and polished till it looks like it was just purchased.
The Fire company also recognizes members who have gone above and beyond throughout the previous year (2016) and they are as follows.
Venture Crew Member of the Year: Danny Essig
Fire Corps. Member of the Year: Firefighter Aiden Healy
Squad Award: Ex-Chief Brian Dwyer
Squad Award: Firefighter Walter Hickey
Squad Award: Ex-Chief Tom Chenet
Squad Award: Ex-Chief Richard Benkwitt
Driver of the Year: Firefighter Richard Miller
Rookie of the Year: Firefighter Oscar Pardo
Chief's Award: Firefighter Maurice "Mo" O'Connor
Firefighter of the Year: Ex-Chief Bob Rodgers
Several years ago, the Fire Chief's came up with an idea to keep the morale among the members high during what we call General House Duty (the two week period before inspection). The members were separated into squads with a Lieutenant and assigned a Engine or Tower Ladder. The members compete in a friendly competition to win the "Captain's Award". On inspection day, all the apparatus are inspected by Parade Judges and they determine the winner to keep the results unbiased. This years award goes to the crew of the apparatus listed below. Congratulations to all the members of the Thornwood Fire Department.
