On January 4th, 2015 Thornwood Fire Department responded on a Dual Response with Hawthorne Fire Department to a Con Edison Sub Station Fire. at approximately 9:30AM Mount Pleasant Police started receiving multiple calls for a transformer on fire in the area of 507 Commerce St. Mount Pleasant Police quickly notified Westchester County 60 Control and dispatched the Fire Departments. Upon Arrival, Chief K. Dwyer transmitted a 10-75 (working fire) and set up a command post with Hawthorne's Fire Chief. While assessing the situation, Con Edison arrived on scene. Chief's ordered MTA to shut down all power on nearby Metro North Railroad Tracks. Based on the situation with the amount of electricity put out by the Sub Station, Specialized Units Were called in from Westchester County HAZMAT and Yonkers Fire Department. With these specialized units, we were able to put a foam operation into operation. Usually Fire Departments carry foam canisters on the apparatus but not enough for an extended operation of this nature. Yonkers Fire Brought their FOAM Unit which can carry 250 gallons of foam. With that in operation we started with 2 handlines in operation later getting to a 3rd handline. The Fire itself was brought under control shortly after but Units remained on scene to investigate the cause and overhaul. On behalf of Thornwoodfire.com and Thornwood Fire Department, we would like to thank all departments involved in todays incident. Stay Safe Brothers.
