Membership & Organization
The Thornwood Fire Department operates under the governance of the Fire District’s Board of Fire Commissioners. The Board consists of five residents elected by the voters of the Thornwood Fire District, responsible for managing the fiscal and administrative affairs of the district.
The Fire Chief reports directly to the Board of Fire Commissioners and oversees all operational aspects of the department, including emergency response, training, and apparatus and equipment readiness.
Thornwood Fire Company No. 1 is comprised of approximately 75 dedicated volunteer firefighters who provide protection to more than 2,500 homes and businesses within a five-square-mile response area. The department serves a resident population of nearly 6,000, along with many additional daily visitors.
Volunteer Opportunities
The department actively seeks motivated individuals to join its ranks and serve the community.

Membership Pathway
Membership opportunities are available for a wide range of age groups, providing a structured progression into active firefighting roles:
Youth Programs (Ages 14–15)
Participation begins through the Boy Scout Venturing Program, introducing young members to the fire service in a supervised environment.
Fire Corps (Ages 16–17)
Members gain increased exposure to department operations, training, and support functions while continuing their development.
Senior Membership (Age 18 and Above)
At age 18, individuals are eligible to become full active firefighters, participating in emergency response and all operational activities.
