History of the Thornwood Fire Company No. 1

The history of the Thornwood Fire Company No. 1 is both rich and enduring, reflecting over a century of dedicated volunteer service to the community.

Early Beginnings

In the late 19th century, in an area then known as Sherman Park, a group of residents recognized the growing need for organized fire protection as the community expanded. Their efforts led to the formation of the Sherman Park Fire Company.

The original firehouse was a modest one-bay structure located on Manhattan Avenue near Hancock Place. Equipment at the time was simple but effective, consisting of a hand-drawn pump mounted on a trailer, along with pike poles and hand pails. Firefighters manually transported the pump using ropes, demonstrating the commitment and determination that would define the department for generations.

Formation of Thornwood Fire Company

In 1907, the establishment of the Hawthorne Fire Company prompted the Sherman Park Fire Company to adopt a new identity as Thornwood Fire Company No. 1. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in the organization’s development.

Transition to Motorized Apparatus

As technology advanced, so did the department. In 1917, Thornwood acquired its first motorized apparatus—a Ford Model T fire truck. Delivered unassembled by rail, it was built by company members and outfitted for service. Remarkably, this apparatus remains one of the oldest operational fire vehicles in New York State today. It was fully restored in the early 1990s and continues to serve as a proud symbol of the department’s heritage.

Expansion and Infrastructure Growth

With continued population growth, the need for expanded facilities became evident. The department acquired a former school building at the corner of Commerce and Edwin Streets, converting it into a firehouse through extensive volunteer labor and community support. This historic structure still stands today, identifiable by its distinctive bell tower.

During this period, another organization—the Pioneer Fire Company—operated independently on Franklin Avenue. Both companies relied on donations and fundraising efforts to sustain operations, but increasing costs for equipment and protective gear made funding a challenge.

Establishment of the Fire District

In 1932, the Thornwood Fire District was established to provide stable funding through taxation. The Thornwood Fire Company transferred its assets, including property, apparatus, and equipment, to the newly formed district. The first Board of Fire Commissioners convened on February 10, 1932, appointing William McManus as the district’s first Chief.

Modern Era Developments

In 1963, a new, modern firehouse was constructed at 770 Commerce Street on land originally donated by the Masbeck family. This facility significantly enhanced operational capabilities and remains the department’s primary station today.

Over the years, the department has continued to modernize its fleet and equipment to meet the evolving demands of emergency services, including fire suppression, rescue operations, and vehicle extrication.

Youth Engagement and Community Service

Recognizing the importance of developing future firefighters, the department established a Fire Corps program in 1982. Founded by a group of local teenagers, the program provides young members with opportunities to assist firefighters and gain valuable experience. Many current members began their service through this initiative.

A Tradition of Volunteerism

Today, Thornwood Fire Company No. 1 is comprised of approximately 65 active volunteer firefighters. The department proudly maintains a strong tradition of family service, with multiple generations contributing to its legacy. One family alone represents four generations of service, including individuals who have served as Chiefs and Commissioners.

Advancing Emergency Services

As the role of the fire service has expanded, the department has invested in advanced rescue and firefighting technologies. Equipment such as hydraulic extrication tools, rescue airbags, boats, and thermal imaging cameras has enhanced operational effectiveness and safety.

These advancements ensure that Thornwood Fire Company No. 1 remains a progressive and capable organization, committed to protecting life and property while honoring its historic roots.
